How to Find the Best Gift for Both of You on Valentine’s Day

Karen Patten

Did you ever see “Shall We Dance?” A line delivered by Susan Sarandon perfectly describes the reason that we commit to one another and, in a sneaky little way, holds the secret to choosing the best gift for Valentine’s Day:

We need a witness to our lives. There’s a billion people on the planet… I mean, what does any one life really mean? But in a marriage, you’re promising to care about everything. The good things, the bad things, the terrible things, the mundane things… all of it, all of the time, every day. You’re saying ‘Your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it. Your life will not go un-witnessed because I will be your witness’.”

Ever wish you could easily tell him what the best gift for Valentines day is? Here's a sneaky little secret that will help you find the best gift for Valentine's Day - for him OR for her! www.themidlifemamas.com

We all want to be noticed and to be cared for. In a commitment or a marriage, we promise to care about all of the things every day, all the time. As humans, it’s one of our deepest desires – to be noticed, heard, and understood.

Confession time: I’m not a huge fan of Valentine’s Day. But for the last couple of years, we have chosen to celebrate Valentine’s Day in a different way.

In the lead up to Valentine’s Day, I feel a lot of pressure to find the best Valentine’s gift that embodies my deepest emotion – love. And then I remember what we each desire most is to be noticed and that I am the witness to my partner’s life. So what I want is a gift that reflects the fact that I have noticed; I am witness.

Sleep / Wellness

As I approach my 50’s, the focus of my life is adjusting. I’m exploring new dimensions of my life as I suspect many of us are. I find that I need to work more diligently than ever before to find and maintain my health. I also find that getting enough sleep is absolutely crucial to my being able to function. So this is a great area for so many of us to explore as the best gift for Valentine’s Day.

In The Sleep Revolution: Transforming Your Life One Night at a Time, Arianna Huffington explores our sleep deprivation crisis. Our society seems to regard being overwhelmed, overscheduled, and under slept as some sort of badge of honor.

I know for myself and from talking to my friends, we are constantly feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. And this includes our spouses and partners. So I am witness to the overwhelm and our need for sleep. As a witness, a perfectly loving gift would be something to aid in getting more quality sleep. (You could accompany any of these gifts with an overnight at a local hotel!)

Philips HF3520 Wake-Up Light With Colored Sunrise Simulation: The Philips Wake-Up Light provides a pleasant, natural way to start your morning. Featuring a colored sunrise simulation and 20 brightness settings, the light gradually increases between 20 to 40 minutes prior to your alarm time. The light also offers the option of waking up to one of five different nature-inspired sounds. Backed by clinical research, the UV-free Wake-Up Light is proven to wake you up with an improved mood and energy level.

Just Because…You Noticed

Breville BES870XL Barista Express: If you are certain that you own a brick or at least a booth at your local coffee shop based on how often you’re there, this is your answer!
