What was I doing wrong? At our house, we all eat nutritious meals – veggies, fruits, protein, not too much sugar – we all know the drill. We take fish oil, a daily probiotic, and a multi-vitamin. We get exercise and as much outdoor time as we can squeeze into our schedule. Doing pretty well, right???? Yeah. That’s what I thought. But then I had to wonder every fall and winter, why was somebody always “coming down with something” or “on the verge of something” or just downright sick? At one point the nurse in our pediatrician’s office actually offered to set up a cot for us. She was kidding, of course, but seriously?????
I had been hearing a lot about this whole “essential oils” situation. But what, exactly, was the “essential oils” situation? Snake oils, I figured. Then I started doing what I do. I looked into it. I googled. I researched. There are so many great resources out there now to make your research easy! Just as I did – I encourage you to search for yourself for scientific studies and personal testimonials to help you along as your research and consider the myriad roles that essential oils can play in lifting you up to a place of vibrant wellness and optimal health!
Then I started asking people. Tentatively, of course. I didn’t want to sound like some hippy chick asking about cray cray essential oils. I felt like I might as well be asking if I should rattle some weird bones over my kids’ throats to keep them from getting strep. But you know what? The people I asked were, like, “Oh, yeah. Our family uses ’em.” Seriously? How had I missed my memo? Maybe it scrolled by my Facebook feed unnoticed?
I confess. I’m a “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” kinda girl. There was just too much smoke for there not to be a raging inferno somewhere nearby. I decided to dive into this pot of presumed hocus pocus. After a lot of investigation and research, I settled on Young Living Oils based on their one of a kind reassuring Seed to Seal quality guarantee. But I was a complete skeptic.
I figured I could spend hours and hours researching what essential oils I wanted to try, how to use them, trying to figure out what I wanted to do with them in addition to supporting our immune systems, or… I could take advantage of the fact that Young Living did all of the hard work for me!!! Young Living already spent the time and figured all this out; they put it together into one pretty package. Young Living has put together a Premium Starter Kit (PSK) that includes bottles of each of the ten of the therapeutic essential oils most commonly used on a daily basis – plus one bonus bottle. The PSK also includes a diffuser (holy cow!), samples of other Young Living products including the amazing Ningxia Red, and testers of several oils to share with friends. My sponsor also included a ton of freebies to help me learn how to use my new essential oils: a Desk Reference for Essential Oils, additional sheets with quick to reference information, a set of stickers to label the tops of my bottles and keep them organized, and an invitation to join closed groups on Facebook which was a treasure trove of information from long time oilers and novices alike. All of this was over a $300 retail value – and I got it for $150! This was a fabulous deal for my experiment!!! If I was going to try this “snake oil” out, I needed a good sampling of what people were commonly using; reference and training materials; and a great deal. Young Living did all of the work for me and put all of this together in the Premium Starter Kit!
When my kit arrived – I immediately wanted to check out my diffuser and each one of the essential oils. This was not just any old diffuser, it was an ultrasonic diffuser. Ultrasonic diffusers use water to create a fine mist with your oils that can run for up to 4 hours! Then I started to use the essential oils. One of us, as usual, was on the verge of getting sick and needed immune support pronto! I used my resource guide and the collective resources on the Facebook pages, came up with a protocol from my Everyday Oils Kit. The oils effectively aided our natural and powerful immune systems in doing its job; keeping us vibrantly healthy and well. It was amazing. Mind you – I was super skeptical and figured this snake oil wouldn’t work. But…I had a ton of successes the first two weeks and was crazy for my diffuser (you don’t want to know how many more I bought that first month…). And every time I continued to be shocked at the power of the oils to aid our bodies in doing what they are beautifully and naturally designed to do: keep us healthy and well. They continue to amaze.
Then came what everyone in my family considered to be the ultimate test: my mother. My mother is 83 years old with advanced Alzheimer’s disease. If you’ve cared for anyone with dementia – you know that brushing their teeth (and especially their tongue) is about as easy as herding cats into a bath tub of running water. So, after prolonged periods of time without adequate tongue brushing…one’s tongue can get super yucky. My mom’s tongue was 1/2 black. Super yucky. The dentist was dismissive and said it couldn’t be helped. Really? Did I mention super yucky? I suggested to my father that he brush her tongue once a day with one drop of Thieves essential oil blend to support and maximize mom’s oral health . If my snake oil could get rid of my mother’s black tongue – my father (an opera lover) agreed to henceforth respectfully refer to me as Dr. Dulcamara (the purveyor of “elixirs” in Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love). Within three days, I was fondly referred to as Dr. Dulcamara! Yes, my friends, within three days, my mother’s black tongue was as pink as yours and mine! This stuff just worked. I began to get excited for my next order! What else could I do with the essential oils contained within these magical, beautifully colored little vials?????
Since then, I HAVE NEVER LOOKED BACK! Not for one moment. Ever. I have been introduced to an entire new world of health and healing. I can’t believe that EVERYONE doesn’t know about and use these oils that have been used for 1,000’s of years to maintain their health. I want to spread the word!!! Yeah to essential oils! and I love Oily Families! =)
They are just life changing, aren’t they?
I love essential oils! I always love learning all things new!
I think essential oils are great for some things, but not an alternative to modern medicine. I use lavender oil often for relaxing.
I agree that I would never want to not follow your doctor’s orders or to fail to seek medical advice or treatment when you need it! We’ve used essential oils to help maintain and support our overall health so that we dont need to go to the doctor – which I am completely in favor of! When I recently took my youngest son in for his well visit – the doctor remarked on the fact that we hadn’t been in to see him in over ten months!
Well. Dang it, now I want to jump on the band wagon, what can essential oils do for allergies? Right now it’s either a sinus infection, a cold or all my allergy meds just don’t seem to be working. I’ll try anything at this point.
Hi! I’m so glad you mentioned allergies. Conquering my spring allergies are HIGH on the list of my great (and unexpected) successes with essential oils. You can read about my allergies here and how the essential oils helped me. https://themidlifemamas.com/natural-allergy-relief/
Take a look and message me if you have any questions or you would like to get started! Please know that I have only used Young Living oils and that they are the ONLY oils I can recommend ingesting because of their seed to seal purity guarantee. I am also NOT a doctor – just a mom and somebody who has had a lot of success with essential oils.
I need go try EO. I’m ordering some to try this week! I hear such great things and I hear all the benefits for kids are amazing. Need.
First of all. Six time mommy. Respect 🙂 I’ve got some fabulous specials going on this month with over $50 in free gifts included with a Premium Starter Kit which includes 11 everyday oils, a diffuser, a roller ball top, samples to share with friends, samples of Ningxia Red (a fabulous antioxidant filled supplement) and an educational quick reference – giving you everything you need to get started right away! Along with educational materials, including a reference book with over 400 pages, ongoing education and support, is Holly Homer’s book 101 Kids Activities (from Kids Activities Blog), a diffuser necklace, and a $20 Amazon gift card. I have been considering looking further into essential oils. I am really happy to have found your post. I love hearing the benefits you found and also learning about Young Living. I will definitely check them out!
Hi Amy! Thank you for checking out my post! I read yours and, although I’m not a doctor, I have to wonder if there is help for you with the oils. I’ll give you two places to start investigating. One place you can start is here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed
This site is searchable and provides information on scientific studies and research that has been done on various oils. I also always try to remember when searching that any given study does not typically discuss the grade of oil used in the study; Young Living’s oils are of the highest therapeutic grade quality. The second site that you could use to investigate is:
http://www.oil-testimonials.com
This site, again, is searchable – but instead contains testimonials from regular people who have had successes with the oils. I’m not a doctor – but reading testimonials was very helpful for me in making my decision. I’m a “where there’s smoke, there’s fire – or at least something worth checking out” kinda girl 🙂
I hope this helps you as you begin to look into whether you thinking trying essential oils would be a good fit for you. If you have any questions, I would be happy to help in any way I can.
I recently got introduced to essential oils and I’m totally loving them. I feel very relaxed and able to unwind especially after a long day,
I’m so glad to hear this! I love hearing about another family getting to experience the benefits of essential oils!
Essential oils well, to tell you the truth I’m not into oils mainly because I’m oily enough. My face especially I’ve never dabbled into essential oils sorry.
Here’s some great information about how essential oils – although counterintuitive – can actually be really helpful for oily skin 🙂

Maybe it’s worth the read 🙂
i seriously keep hearing more and more about young living. i feel like one of these days i really need to give it a try. 🙂 so far i’ve only used argon oil for eyelashes.
Wow – Argon oil is a new one to me! I have heard many people using one drop of lavender in their mascara to help grow longer, stronger lashes. There are a lot of great reasons to start with essential oils: health, to reduce uses of cleaning toxins in your home, beauty products without toxins, – just so many great things to try with essential oils. I’d love to help you learn more whenever you’re ready!
This is my first time to learn about essential oils. I’ll check Healthy Options the next time I visit the mall to see if they have one.
I’m so glad you’ve heard about them now! If you’re interested in checking out Young Living, I’d be happy to help you get started!
i have been hearing a lot about essential oils but I am yet to venture out into them. The benefits are so amazing that I am considering getting some as soon as I settle down in few weeks time.
I’ll be happy to provide you with some more information when you’re ready!
i just got all into this stuff this past winter and OMG was I missing out!! I just love essential oils! I will have to check out Young Living when I run low!
It’s amazing, isn’t it? I still get giddy hearing about successes other people are having! I’ll be happy to share Young Living with you when you’re ready!
That is a nice set of essential oils. I am planning to buy a citronella oil since there are a lot of mosquitoes around. It seems to be a hard search for me.
Young Living does produce Citronella essential oil! The mosquitoes are awful where I am too!
This is an awesome post indeed. I do know there are more families turning to essential oils for their health need. Thanks for sharing.
You’re so welcome! I’m glad you enjoyed the post!
I’ve heard many great things about essential oils. They really have become important to everyone’s lives. I need to get on board and try it.
They have been such a game changer for us! I’d love to help you get started when you’re ready!
From one oily family to another, congrats! I love diffusing and have several oils on the go constantly and don’t get me started about cleaning with oils as well. So many uses.
YES! Confession: I have a diffuser in my car 🙂
I recently starting using essential oils to make homemade toothpaste and relaxing bath salts… it works so incredibly well! Loved hearing how you were able to help your mother <3
Essential oils have been so great in our family! Feel free to check out my oily boards on Pintrest! https://www.pinterest.com/spoilmyfami0429/
