Reducing sugar in your diet doesn’t mean that you won’t ever want something sweet. However, hopefully, once you’ve reduced your sugar intake to an amount that works for your body, your cravings will automatically come less often, but what about when you do have a sugar craving?

Eat Something Sweet to Satisfy Sugar Cravings!

Yes – you read that correctly! Eat something sweet! It may not be what you were hoping for, but it’s sweet! Fresh fruit! Fresh fruit is naturally sweet and delicious. And after you’ve laid off the processed sugar for 3-4 weeks, I can guarantee that many fresh fruits will taste like candy. You will really be able to enjoy fruit in a whole new way once your taste buds are no longer dulled to sugar.

Fresh Fruits Naturally Have Low Glycemic Loads to Keep Blood Sugar Steady

Some people are worried about about the sugar in fruits – and specifically the fructose in fruits, which is thought to be the most damaging. As you can see on this table, all fresh fruits (meaning, I’m not including dried fruits such as prunes, figs, raisins or dates) have a glycemic load of 11 or less. Under 11 is considered a low glycemic load and 11-19 is considered an average glycemic load. So fruit, although sweet and juicy, when eaten in moderation is the perfect way to satisfy sugar cravings!

Fruits Are Loaded with Antioxidants and Fiber to Satisfy Sugar Cravings

Fruits are loaded with healthy antioxidants to keep your body functioning at peak performance. Foods that have antioxidant properties function in a way so as to slow cellular damage.

Antioxidants are chemicals (both naturally occurring and man-made) that can prevent or slow cell damage. An “antioxidant” is actually not a substance; it’s a behavior. Any compound that can donate electrons and counteract free radicals has antioxidant properties. (source)

Many fruits are also loaded with fiber. Fiber helps to keep you feeling full for longer – which can prevent overeating and help satisfy sugar cravings. Fiber also helps to keep food moving through your body efficiently. (Read: stopped up is bad…) Checking out this table will give you a good idea about the fiber content in fresh fruits.

So, as with everything (except maybe vegetables), you can overdo it with fruit. But, despite its sugar content, feel free to eat plenty  of fruit and gain all of the health benefits that it has to offer.
